Watch out for what this article says: The ATR 72 has caused over 500 deaths. The causer? Ice
In the article they show two cases where ice was the catastrophic factor:
1. 1994 crash that saw an American Eagle ATR 72-200 go down in Indiana, killing all 68 people on board, likely after an ice buildup.
2. ATR-72 stalled out in 2016 in Norway when ice built up on the plane. The pilot in that incident was able to regain control of the aircraft.
Therefore, in Brazil they are pointing to the accumulation of ice on the wings, if so, then we are facing a possible structural failure of all ATR's.
@thad-merritt If it becomes known that this is what is happening, they should ground all ATRs until there is a definitive solution.
@jean-pierreI Most likely, that can happen. IT IS A STRUCTURAL FAILURE.
